Message from the Editor:

This issue of Washington Public Health opens with a special section highlighting the international collaborations of faculty at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine. Such collaborations date to the School's precursor, the Department of Preventive Medicine, and Dr. Thomas Grayston's chlamydial studies in Taiwan during the 1960s and 1970s. Subsequently, the School's international work expanded exponentially as faculty in all the departments engaged in research and teaching activities in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and the former Soviet Union. The ten articles in this issue convey the diverse scope of these global links and affirm the importance of an international component to the University mission, as UW President Richard McCormick notes in his message introducing this section.

The topics covered in this special section are relevant beyond academia. The international aspects of public health reach even to the rural areas of our state. Our food supply is global, and humans serve as vectors for diseases mundane or exotic, from measles to HIV/AIDS. We ignore the global situation at our peril. Public health practitioners also will find topics of interest in the eclectic array of articles that comprise the latter half of this issue.

A farewell message from Dean Gil Omenn, who recently departed for the University of Michigan, is found in the front pages. His keen interest in and strong support of Washington Public Health have contributed greatly to the continuing development of the magazine. We will miss his energy, wisdom, and vision.
