Questions to Consider About Distance Learning

by Linda Baker and Margaret Shield

Establish the Need

As with other educational formats, learning at a distance does not work for all students or all subjects.

  • Why do you think distance learning is desirable in your situation?
  • What educational needs are not met for you now?
  • How would distance learning address these needs?
Consider Your Subject
As technology develops and more people have access to electronic delivery of education, more and more subjects can be taught at least in part by distance learning.
  • What is the nature of the content in the distance-learning course or program you're considering?
  • Are there skills, competencies, concepts, or capabilities that will be difficult for you to acquire without face-to-face contact with the instructor or other learners?
  • If so, how will these be addressed?
Consider Your Learning Style
In general, distance learning requires learner independence, discipline, and technical ability. It may also be a new educational experience for you.
  • How will you be supported while you become comfortable in this new environment?
  • Do you have the self-motivation and self-discipline to learn successfully at a distance?
Explore the Course or Program Carefully
Distance-learning opportunities and the experiences learners have with them vary greatly depending on the design of the course, the technology(s) used, and the services offered by the course provider.
  • What technologies do you need to participate in the course?
  • Will you work independently or will you interact with other learners working on the same material?
  • Do you have to complete the course in a specific time period?
  • Who can you contact if you need technical assistance?
  • Does the institution or agency providing the distance-learning course have a good reputation in your field for offering quality education or training?
